Momento Sagrado

Bobby Lee Krajnik
"Momento Sagrado"
30 x 30x 1.5"
oil on canvas

This is one of my larger pieces and one of my favorite churches to paint. My rendition of  St. Ann's Parish in Tubac, Arizona. The present church was built in 1929. It stands on the foundations of the earlier Church of Santa Gertrudis de Tubac, c.1767, which was built after an earlier church had been destroyed by Pima Indians. The Tubac Presidio was built in 1751, after Tubac was destroyed during an Indian rebellion in which most of the inhabitants killed. The area today is a thriving artist community located in Southern Arizona about 20 miles north of Nogales and 40 miles south of Tucson.

The San Lorenzo de Picuris mission is part of the Picuris Pueblo in Taos County, New Mexico. Made of adobe, the structure was built in 1776. The church is dedicated to Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of Picuris. The pueblo people are Tiwa. The name Pickuria means "those who paint". The pueblo is known for it's arts and crafts especially the micaceous pottery produced there.

"Iglesia Blanca"

Bobby Lee Krajnik
"Iglesia Blanca"
12 x 12 x 1.5"
oil on board

I found a sectional image of the San Geronimo Chapel in Taos, New Mexico, and just found the angles beautiful. San Geronimo chapel is part of the Taos Pueblo and of the Tiwa speaking tribe of Pueblo people. The adobe church was built in 1850 but the Pueblo itself is approximately 1,000 years old and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States.
